Ending of an Era

After 13 very successful years, the Ribbon Riders will close our doors and end our involvement with the Central Florida breast cancer community. The world is changing, and life’s challenges have pulled each of us in different directions.

We started this group in 2008 with strong women who loved riding motorcycles and who wanted to make a difference in their community. The Ribbon Riders has always been a grass-roots, all-volunteer organization. We had a PO Box, a website, a phone line, and lots of determination!

People were surprised when we told them we weren’t trying to find a cure for cancer or fund research. We were trying to help a woman with breast cancer get through treatment. The cost of fighting breast cancer is staggering. We made sure that women received help with rent, utilities, gasoline, medical travel expenses, co-pays, groceries, and other immediate needs.

To date, we distributed more than $700,000 to breast cancer patients going through treatment in the Central Florida area. No staff. No office. Just women who wanted to make a difference. There is no limit to what can be accomplished when savvy, smart and organized women get behind a cause.

Thanks to everyone who came to our Go Pink! fundraisers, the chili cook-off competitions, or stopped by our pink tent to buy merchandise.

Thanks to the companies who partnered with us to raise funds – Gore Family Memorial Foundation Trust, Tre’ Bella Salon, Brighton Collectibles in Millennia Mall and Altamonte Mall. Komen Central Florida, Rock Pink, Cypress Cove, Arden Courts, Eagle Rider, Seminole Power Sports, Orlando Harley, Seminole Harley, SCHOG Inc and many, many more. Special thanks to the Gore Family Memorial Foundation Trust for their annual grants.

We are happy that other non-profits like Komen now recognize the need to help cancer patients with the cost of treatment. Knowing that our mission is being carried on by other organizations makes it easier for us to close this chapter and move on.

You’ll still see RR members out and about. We’re closing down the non-profit and fundraising side of things, but we’ll still be out riding and having fun. Look for the hot-pink shirts!

Our goal was to make a difference. Thank you for helping us meet that goal.
